There are two schools of thought about this. On the one hand, noting the name of the center and which oil pattern was used, your scores on each pair of lanes, which bowling balls you used, where you stood and where you targeted, and which pins you knocked down and which you left standing, can help you decide which areas to focus on in competition in the tournaments that follow.

The notes can also serve as strategic intelligence for the next time you bowl in that same center. On the other hand, if your notes tell you one thing and then lane conditions are different from the last time, your score may suffer because you stubbornly followed your notes instead of making a needed adjustment to the new conditions. The best bowlers are those who adjust quickly to any situation. Additionally, you may find the pressure to take complete notes or enter each shot into an app, and the need to keep track of your notebook or phone at all times, increases your stress level when you need to be more relaxed.

It's all a matter of your personal preference and what works for you. You can find links to bowling apps in our Resources for Serious Bowling guide. An oil pattern's specifications are usually outlined on the "oil pattern sheet" sometimes called an oil pattern graph, oil pattern diagram, or program sheet , and the best serious bowlers know how to read these sheets and adjust their bowling accordingly. To increase the challenge further, some competitive tournaments that use a more challenging pattern do not share the oil pattern sheet and may even not disclose any of the oil pattern's specifications.

In this case, a top-level bowler will get a general idea of the patterns specifications in practice by watching carefully the first few throws of a bowling ball he or she knows very well. Did the ball hook earlier or not at all? When it hooked, what board did it hook on? And so on. From the answers to these questions the bowler will know the adjustments to make. There is a lot to learn here. Our Oil Patterns guides can help. When will I be ready to move to the next level?

Once you have become comfortable in the competitive team environment, you may find yourself wanting to step up to the challenge of individual competition.
