In a standard situation only administrators are allowed to connect to foreign not contained in their domain printers. It is easier if you use other types of connections - or you create a script, which has to be run as administrator, to install those printers.

This script you could propagate via a public share, via an usb-stick or most elegantly via a webpage. At the moment it is all a win7 environment to keep things simple so the print server and two client pc's are all win 7. This is a public network, but I want any user to have the ability whether it is a laptop that belonged to someone who comes from a domain environment, as well as free lancers that possibly come from a workgroup setup to be able to use the print server to get attached to the various printers that are located at this 'open location'.

The clients will be on xp 32bit and Win7 64bit machines. We hoped to use Win7 on a pc as a print server for it allows upto 20 clients as a make shift print server allowing all users to use freely. Access is denied. Any advice or help would be appreciated. If you want full unrestricted access for everyone without a password you need to enable the guest account and give it no password, allow everyone to print and disable the "Limit local account use of blank passwords to cosole logon only" security policy.

That should bring you further in that case. I need the client pc that is not part of the print server workgroup to access the shared printer. Therefore I thought the print server would to allow permission to any user that connected, as well as the client machine that has only user permissions to trust to install the print driver. What permissions need to be set - I am uatnsure and I would be grateful for any andvice : thanks, John.

I think it may be a problem on the client pc for if I login as an admin on the client pc I can search and install the printer, but when logged in as a user, I can search and find the printer but upon installing the driver I get the message as mentioned in my first post. Hi Wolfgang, all security permissions for the printer is ticked for 'everyone' except the special permissions I want other to be able to managed the printer jobs for it is a small public network site.

The printer is shared. You have to allow printer installation on your WIN7 client. Or you install Printers for all users, which can be done via rundll32 printui. Upon searching and trying to install as a user on the client pc I now get a prompt appearing with the message.

That usually means path not found. Is this the only user with that error message? If you have several users to use this PC I think the method to install the printer as administrator for all users is more suitable for you.
